Wars for Empire • 1689 = William and Mary become King & Queen of England • 1689 - 1697 = War of the League of Augsburg/King William’s War/Second Hundred Years War • 1702 – 1713 = Queen Anne’s War/War of Spanish Succession • 1739 = War of Jenkin’s Ear • 1740 – 1748 = King George’s War/War of Austrian Succession

  3. Why did these wars matter? • Fighting in both Europe & America • Little change in land boundaries • Resentment in America

  4. French & Indian War/7 Years War • France & England compete for the fur trade in North America & trade in India • French ally with most Native Americans • England ally with Iroquois • Colonists provide supplies & soldiers • Spain enters war in 1762

  5. Cajuns • England conquers Acadia • French Catholic Acadians deported & move to Louisiana

  6. Results of Peace of Paris • France gave Canada & land East of Mississippi River to England • Spain gives Florida to England • France gives Louisiana to Spain • Spanish Floridians flee to Cuba

  7. Why does this war matter? • England now sees colonies as market for manufactured goods • Canada & Florida now under English rule • First close-contact between English and colonists • Americans more confident about challenging England • Americans still loyal to England
