Ponies • A small horse normally 14.2 hands or smaller at the withers. • Stocky bodies, round shape, short head, large eyes, and small ears.
Shetland Pony • Strong and hardy pony. • Dished face, muscular neck, with short strong legs. • Good natured and make good kid ponies.
Miniature Pony • Normally less than 34 inches at the withers. • Very friendly and alert. • Breed Association: American Miniature Horse Association.
Pony of Americas • Originated from a Shetland stallion and Arabian and Appaloosa mares. • Created for smaller riders. • 11-13 hands tall, well muscled, and must be colored like the Appaloosa.
Draft • A heavy or large horse bred for hard work such as plowing and driving. • They are strong, docile, and patient. • 16 hands or taller, large boned, feathered feet, weigh around 1,300 to 2,000 lbs.
Clydesdale • Normally bay in color with white markings. • Well muscled with an arching neck and tall withers. • This breed is used by Budweiser.
Belgian • Normally sorrel with a flaxen mane and tail. • Most popular draft breed in the United States. • Small head, powerful shoulders and hindquarters, and short legs.
Percheron • 16.2-17.3 hands tall and weight around 1,900 lbs. • Normally grey or black in color. • Used for draft work, but they are also good show jumpers.
Gaited Horses • Breeds that have a natural smooth 4 beat gait. • This natural gait is also called “ambling.”
American Saddlebred • Developed in Kentucky by plantation owners. • Commonly used for driving, pleasure riding, and trail riding because of their naturally smooth gate. • Normally 15-17 hands tall.
Paso Fino • Naturally gaited, light horse that was imported from Spain. • Small body type, but very strong. • Weigh 800-1,000 lbs. • Have a very fast 4 beat gate that can reach up to 25 mph.
Tennessee Walker • Known for their smooth “running walk” or 4 beat gate. • Popular for pleasure or trail riding because of their calm and easy going temperament. • 15-17 hands and weigh 900-1,200 lbs.
Light Horse Breeds • Most predominant types of horses used today. • Popular for their ability in the show ring, speed on the racetrack, ability on the ranch, and leisure on the trail.
Quarter Horse • Refined head, well muscled, broad chest and hind quarters. • 14-16 hands tall and weigh 900-1,200 lbs. • Noted for their versatility as race horses, cow horses, pleasure horses, and all around performance horses.
Thoroughbred • Known for its use in horse racing due to their speed, agility, and spirit. • Also used for jumping, dressage, polo, and barrel racing. • Tall, slim, athletic appearance standing 15-17 hands tall.
Appaloosa • Best known for its spotted coat and lack of mane and tail. • Date back to the Nez Perce Indians in the late 1800’s. • Stand 14-16 hands and weigh 950-1,250 lbs.
Arabian • Finely chiseled bone structure, dished face, arched neck, comparatively level croup, high-carried tail. • Known for speed, refinement, endurance, and small bone. • Stand 14-15 hands tall and weigh 900-1,000 lbs.
Paint • Developed from a base of spotted horses with Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred bloodlines. • Very versatile breed standing 14-16 hands and weigh 900-1,200 lbs.
