  1. Hiccup A spasm of the diaphragm resulting in a rapid, involuntary inhalation that is stopped by the sudden closure of the glottis and accompanied by a sharp, distinctive sound.

  2. Problem Statement • That’s the problem… • we’re at a “do what I mean” stage • “It’s urgent, make light move faster” • Past work • Definitions • SIP RPH • MLPP-that-works • Etc

  3. Still needed: • That’s what we’re here to figure out • Applications need a way to specify • Underlying traffic class • Authentication to use it • Application behaviors that give desired service to users • Network/Network Interface configurations that can be predictably negotiated among providers

  4. Authentication problems in voice/video • Who gets to use a service? • Voice/video: usage of RPH needs authentication • Integration with existing network layer work and RPH

  5. SMTP Electronic Mail • Need to be able to specify that an email must be delivered within a stated interval • Service to an authenticated user: • “Resource Priority Header” in envelope • Policy authentication (DKIM?) • Server rules on queuing, retransmission

  6. SIP Instant Messaging • Wants some kind of precedence service • RPH for instant messaging • What does assertion of precedence mean? • Services: • SIMPLE (SIP) • XMPP (Jabber) • Commercial services like AIM/Yahoo?

  7. File Transfer and HTTP • Need to be able to assert a network layer traffic class that a file transfer will use • Authentication of use of certain traffic classes
