Unit 2: Basic Chemistry SkillsLesson 9: Percent Yield Do Now: Prepare HW Question – Limiting Reagents Currently Playing: Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody Book Section: 3.7
The theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product that can be made. • In other words, it’s the amount of product possible as calculated through the stoichiometry problem. • This is different from the actual yield, which is the amount one actually produces and measures. Theoretical Yield
Percent Yield Actual Yield Theoretical Yield Percent Yield = x 100 One finds the percent yield by comparing the amount actually obtained (actual yield) to the amount it was possible to make (theoretical yield). This number is nearly always under 100%. Product is almost always lost.
Example Demonstration – lead (II) nitrate + potassium iodide. 1) What is the balanced equation, and what will be the precipitate?
Example Demonstration – lead (II) nitrate + potassium iodide. 1) What is the balanced equation, and what will be the precipitate? Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2KI(aq) PbI2(s) + 2KNO3(aq)
Example Demonstration – lead (II) nitrate + potassium iodide. 2) How much KI should we combine with 3 grams Pb(NO3)2 3) How much PbI2 should we get at the end of the reaction? Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2KI(aq) PbI2(s) + 2KNO3(aq)
Example Demonstration – lead (II) nitrate + potassium iodide. 4) Demo – What is the percent yield? Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2KI(aq) PbI2(s) + 2KNO3(aq)
Example Adipic acid, H2C6H8O4, is used to produce nylon. The acid is made commercially by a controlled reaction between cyclohexane (C6H12) and O2: 2 C6H12(l) + 5 O2(g) 2 H2C6H8O4(l) + 2 H2O(g) Assume that you carry out this reaction starting with 25.0 g of cyclohexane and that cyclohexane is the limiting reagent. What is the theoretical yield of adipic acid?

What is the theoretical yield of adipic acid? 43.5 g H2C6H8O4
Example If you obtain 33.5 g of adipic acid from your reaction, what is the percent yield of adipic acid?
Example If you obtain 33.5 g of adipic acid from your reaction, what is the percent yield of adipic acid? 77.0%
AP Questions? None? Looks like % yield is mostly a free-response part…
