Ask Sun and IBM about binary compatibilityacross Operating System versions • Ask Sun and IBM if they offer complete binary compatibility across OS versions and with new server hardware. • New versions of HP-UX are transparent to customer and ISV applications; no recompile, no relink, no retest. • Sun Ultrasparc II customers must recompile to benefit from Ultrasparc III • IBM customers must recompile 64-bit applications when moving from AIX 4.3.3 to AIX 5L

Ask Sun and IBM about compatibilityacross architectures • Ask Sun and IBM how they will move their customers to Itanium • HP-UX customers experience a smooth transition to the Itanium Processor Family: • binary compatibility; PA-RISC applications execute transparently on IPF • data compatibility; no data conversions • source code compatibility; compile on IPF for native performance without any source code modification • IBM and Sun customers have no easy or clear path to Itanium: • no binary compatibility • no data compatibility

Ask Sun and IBM about Linux compatibility • Ask Sun and IBM about compatibility between Linux and Solaris and AIX • HP provides source compatibility today and future binary compatibility (2003) from Linux on IPF to HP-UX 11i on IPF • Develop on Linux/IPF and deploy on HP-UX 11i for mission critical capabilities (reliability, availability, performance scalability, security) • IBM cannot provide binary compatibility (no AIX for IPF) • Sun cannot provide binary compatibility (no Solaris for IPF)
