  1. Where should I apply? The differences between a JC, CSU, UC, and private college . . .

  2. What types of programs are offered? • Junior College: • Vocational Certificate, such as EMT & CNA • Associate (AA/AS) Degree, such as LVN & RN • California State University (CSU): • Bachelor (BA/BS) Degree • Master Degree (such as MS, MA, MBA, MPH, MPP, NP, etc.) • University of California (UC): • Bachelor (BA/BS) Degree • Master Degree • Doctorate (Ph.D., M.D.) Degree • Private Colleges/Universities: • Anywhere from Certificate to Doctorate

  3. Minimum Requirements Junior College: • No GPA or SAT/ACT requirement Cal State University (CSU): • Min. GPA: 2.0 • Min. SAT/ACT: • Based on GPA • The higher your GPA, the lower your SAT/ACT can be. • For index, visit: http://www.csumentor.edu/planning/high_school/cal_residents.asp) University of California (UC): • Min. GPA: 3.0 • Min. SAT/ACT: • Like the CSU, also based on GPA. • For index, visit: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/freshman/applying-fall-2012/2012-admissions-index/index.html

  4. Where do I stand? • Let’s start by calculating your GPA . . . • Identify which courses are considered “A through G” • A-G courses are listed on the next slide. • If you need help, please ask a mentor. • Now assign a numeric score to each A-G class. • A:4, B:3, C:2, D:1, F:0 • Be sure to add 1 extra point to each Honors/AP class for a maximum of 8 extra points. • No more than 2 year-long honors classes can be counted for your Sophomore Year. • Remember: • Freshman classes do NOT count. • For CSU, you can include your senior year classes. For UC, you can NOT.

  5. A-G Requirements a. History/social science (2 years) b. English (4 years) c. Mathematics (3 years) d. Laboratory science (2 years) e. Language other than English (2 years) f. Visual and performing arts (1 year) g. College-preparatory elective (1 year)

  6. Now that I have my GPA, what can I do to improve it? • Work on getting better grades for your remaining quarters. Remember, for a CSU, your senior year counts! • Instead of an elective like TA or PE, take more “A through G” classes. The more classes you take, the more opportunity there is to affect your GPA. • If possible, take Honors/AP courses. For a grade of C or better in Honors/AP courses, you get an extra point towards your GPA (up to 8 points). This helps! • If possible, take qualifying classes at a community college or summer school. • If a CSU/UC seems out of reach, don’t stress! There are still plenty of opportunities for a health care career.

  7. Challenge: Your Job • Using today’s exercise as a gauge, as well as your your career aspirations, try to determine which type of college you are interested in applying to. • Our next 2 visits will consist of 3 breakout sessions: (You will pick 2 of the 3 to attend) • UC & Equivalent Private Colleges • CSU & Equivalent Private Colleges • Junior College: Certificate Programs & Transfer Students
