  2. The Bear Facts • The Grizzly Bear is one of the largest animals in North America. • Most males Grizzlies weight about 700 pounds. • They may be any color, from creamy yellow to nearly black.

  3. Bear Country • Grizzly bears are only in North America. • These bears prefer living in the open meadows or river valleys.

  4. Bear Relatives • Grizzly Bears, Polar Bears and Black Bears have many things in common. • They eat meat and plants and have two sets of teeth to eat with. • They walk flat on their feet. • Their front feet are slightly pigeon toed.

  5. Super Sniffer and Sharp Hearing • The Grizzly Bear uses its sensitive nose to search for food and avoid other animals. • They need excellent hearing because they are active in the dark.

  6. On The Move • Being flat footed means the Grizzly can stand upright and take a few steps on his hind legs. • By standing up tall it can pick up interesting smells with its super nose.

  7. Expert Fisherman • The Grizzly can stand in the water and scoop out the salmon with their paw. • Or they stand by the river bank watching and when a salmon swims by they go in after it.

  8. Open Wide • Grizzly Bears have 42 teeth. • Their molars are flat for grinding plant stems and roots. • Their front teeth are large and pointed to tear into their prey.

  9. Signs Winter is Coming • The Grizzly grows an extra thick fur coat. • The amount of food a bear eats. Meaning the fatter the bear the better a chance it has of surviving winter with no food. • Finally when the Grizzly Bear starts searching for a den.

  10. Baby Bears • Grizzly cubs are born in winter. • During this time they nurse on their mother’s milk and sleep. • They grow quickly, by spring they weight about 20 pounds.
