  2. Asbestos-Containing Flooring Materials

  3. Types of Floor Covering Materials Which May Contain Asbestos • Asphalt tile • Rubber tile • Vinyl asbestos tile • Backing on sheet vinyl flooring • Lining felt

  4. Manufacturing Process for Asbestos Containing Floor Covering • Asbestos fibers firmly mixed and coated with binder within product • Tile – fibers encapsulated in vinyl or polymer mass • Sheet flooring (backing only) - fibers blended in latex components to render them encapsulated

  5. Types of Adhesive Which may Contain Asbestos • Asphaltic “cutback” adhesive • Fibers were locked into asphaltic matrix • Not used in adhesive for sheet goods

  6. Types of Tile Which May Contain Asbestos

  7. Asphalt Tile • 9" x 9" or 12" x 12" squares • Typically dark-colored, but light colors also available

  8. Rubber Tile • 9" x 9" or 12" x 12" squares

  9. Vinyl Asbestos Tile

  10. Sheet Vinyl Flooring • 6' and 12' widths • Asbestos in backing of material
