Growing Older in the United StatesThe Good • Happy 65th Birthday! • One in every seven – 15% • Projections for 2060 – 23.5% • More that 18% still working – 83% have completed High School or higher • Poverty among elders in 1966 was 28.5% / In 2012 it had dropped to 9.1%
Growing Older in the United StatesThe Bad • In 2018 one in 7 older adults still live in poverty • 2.6 million grandparents are responsible for raising their grandchildren. • 23% of older adults live alone. • 63% of older adults report facing discrimination.
Growing Older in the United StatesThe Ugly • One third of senior households have no income left after monthly bills, or are in debt after monthly expenses. • Every year 5 million older adults are victims of elder abuse (one in 10 of those living in the community) • In 2014 there were an estimated 5.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease. • 77% of older adults have at least 2 chronic diseases
Caregiving • Over 200,000 Rhode Islanders serve as family/informal caregivers for disabled family members/friends of all ages • That’s 2 in every 10! • RI has the highest percentage of folks 85 + in the US! • 60% of caregivers report “fair or poor” health as apposed to 33% of folks, who are of similar age, but are not providing care. • 30% of caregivers die before the folks they are caring for.

Getting Help • Too Little? • Folks don’t know where to call • Services are designed for low income • Vendors are scarce in some parts of the state • Quality of service provided is uneven • Funding is inadequate and available for only some services • Too Much? • Agencies compete for funding • Duplication is wasteful and confusing • Unique needs can’t always be met • Some quality standards impede care • Inadequate funding for the “right” services
