  2. 1st Thessalonians Background • Author-Paul (Saul) the Apostle along with Silvanus, and Timothy. • Date Written- 50- 51 A.D • Thessalonians= Greek Gentiles • In this time period, the population of Thessalonica was said to be about 200,000.

  3. Description of Recipient • Thessalonica was a large seaport city in Macedonia which is now northern Greece. It was founded in 315 B.C. by Cassander (past king of Macedonia as well as General to Alexander the Great). • The 1st Letter to the Thessalonians was written to encourage the people of Thessalonica to live faithfully in God.

  4. Chapter Summaries/ Key Verses Chapter1: Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy thank God for the fact that the Thessalonians grow in faith. Obstacles: worshipping idols & persecutions Key Verse:(Verse 6) “And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy Spirit.” (Imitators- Pauline theme for imitation) Chapter2:Is about how Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy came as encouragers of the Faith and not to Judge the Thessalonians.

Key Verse:(Verses 14-16) “For you suffer the same things from your compatriots as they did from the Jews, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us; they do not please God, and are opposed to everyone, trying to prevent us from speaking to the Gentiles that they may be saved,” Chapter3: Is about time when Paul and Silvanus left Thessalonica, leaving Timothy to continue the mission.

  6. Key Verse: (Verse 4) “For even when we were among you, we used to warn you in advance that we would undergo affliction.” Chapter4:In chapter 4 of the 1st Letter to the Thessalonians Paul speaks to the Thessalonians about being moral and respecting themselves and others. Key Verse: (Verse 16) “For the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first.”

  7. Chapter5: Paul tells the Thessalonians to be ready for the day when the Lord comes and to help keep each other on the right path. Chapter 5 ends with a final greeting. Key Verse: (Verses 26-28) “Great all the brothers with a holy kiss. I adjure you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the brothers. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

  10. Important Verses • 2 Thessalonians 1: 2 “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” • 2 Thessalonians 1:12 “…That the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified within you and you in him, in accord with the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.”

Important Verses • 2 Thessalonians 2:4 “…Who opposes and exalts himself above every so called god and object of worship, is as to seat himself in the temple of God, claiming that he is a god…” • 2 Thessalonians 2:8 “And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord [Jesus] will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming”

  13. Chapter3 • Paul emphasizes that must continue to work • Important verse: • 2 Thessalonians 3:10 “For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat.”
