The Return Home Chapter 19
Ezra 1:1–4 (TNIV; p. 217) 1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the Lord moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing: 2 “This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: “ ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah.
Ezra 1:1–4 (TNIV; p. 217) 3 Any of his people among you—may their God be with them, and let them go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem. 4 And in any locality where survivors may now be living, the people are to provide them with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with freewill offerings for the temple of God in Jerusalem.’ ”
The Temple Is a Picture • God’s passion to be among us • Our problem with sin • God’s solution for sin
The Temple: A Foreshadow of Christ • Jesus came to us • Jesus’ sacrifice atoned for our sin • Jesus gives us access to God Hebrews 9:24 (NLT) 24 For Christ did not enter into a holy place made with human hands, which was only a copy of the true one in heaven.
Ezra 3:1–3 (TNIV; p. 218) 1 When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns, the people assembled with one accord in Jerusalem. 2 Then Joshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, in accordance with what is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
Ezra 3:1–3 (TNIV; p. 218) 3 Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the Lord, both the morning and evening sacrifices.
Ezra 4:4–5 (TNIV; p. 218) 4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building. 5 They bribed officials to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia.
As certain as a rose grows among thorns, the work of God grows amidst opposition
Ezra 4:24 (TNIV; p. 219) Thus the work on the house of God in Jerusalem came to a standstill until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Haggai 1:3–11 (TNIV; p. 220) 3 Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” 5 Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 6 You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it .”
Haggai 1:3–11 (TNIV; p. 220) 7 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord.9 “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house.
Haggai 1:3–11 (TNIV; p. 220) 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11 I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”
God’s Response to Our Loss of Focus Futility
Responding to Futility Take a good, hard look at your life. Think it over, (Haggai 1:5, The Message).
“Don’t think you can put God in your storage closet of forgotten passions” Max Lucado
Haggai 1:12 (TNIV; p. 220) Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.
Revelation 2:5 (NASB) ‘Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first.’
How to Come Back • Remember • Repent • Do First Works
“If we put first things first, we get the second things thrown in; but if we put second things first, we lose both the first and second things,” (First and Second Things, C.S. Lewis)
Matthew 6:33 (NCV) Seek first God’s kingdom and what God wants. Then all your other needs will be met as well.
