  8. Introduction • Asking questions is one of the most powerful tools in coaching • The fundamental purpose for asking questions during a meaningful conversation is to facilitate a process of becoming, i.e. finding, defining and living identity • Three things are important in order to master the art of asking questions • Question structure, i.e. How you ask the question? • Question purpose, i.e. Why you ask the question? • Question type, i.e. What type of question you ask

  9. How You Ask The Question? • Refers to the structure of the question • The formatin which the question is moulded • Coaches mould their questions primarily in three different ways: • Closed questions. • Open-ended questions. • Rhetorical questions.

  10. Why You Ask A Question? • Refers to the purposeof the question • The fundamental reason for asking questions during coaching remains to facilitate the process of becoming, i.e. help the client see and understand himself according to his beingness

  11. Why You Ask A Question? • The purpose why the Coach asks a specific question depends on: • What the purpose of the specific coaching sessionis? • The character of the already populated reflective space • What the Client ‘throws’ into the reflective space? • What the Coach wants to achieve with the question? • Where the Coach and Client are in the meaningful conversation of a specific coaching session?

  12. Icebreaker • In what three ways can you structure questions in coaching? • Construct a closed question • Construct an open-ended question • Why do you ask questions in coaching? • What 5 types of questions can we ask in coaching? • What is the primary purpose with each of these 5 type of questions? • Give an example of each of these questions

  13. What Type Of Question You Ask? • Refers to the typeof question the Coach asks • The meaningful conversation allows for primarily 3 types of questions: • Factual questions • Three Appreciative Inquiry type questions: • Discover questions • Dream questions • Design questions • Reflection questions

  14. Factual Questions • Factual questions have the potential to invite a Coach or Client’s thinking about factual information into the reflective space • Examples of factual questions are: • What is your name and surname? • How many children do you have? • How was your holiday? • Are you married? • How long have you been working there? • How are you recovering from the operation?

  15. Discover Appreciative Inquiry • Destiny • Dream • Design

  16. Discover • Dream • Design Appreciative Inquiry Past Now Future Destiny

  17. Reflection Questions • The reflection question is a fundamental and important type of question to ask during coaching • On a paradigmatic or philosophical level one needs to understand recursiveness or reflection in order to understand the value of reflection questions

  18. Cause and Effect X Y If then Cause Effect

  19. Lineal Or Reflective/Recursive Y Y X X

  20. Reflection Questions • Reflection questions have the potential to invite a Coach or Client’s thinking about their own thinkinginto the reflective space • Reflection questions ‘forces’ the Client to think about WHY he says or thinks about himself the way he does • Reflection questions facilitates self-awareness

  21. Reflection Questions • Examples of reflection questions: • Why do you think your father was responsible for your inability to respect your wife? • Why would you like to live in Africa? • What do you think cause you to become aggressive when you don’t get your way?

  22. Questionnaires A list of (already designed) questions for a specific purpose
