Election of 1876 The Election of 1876 involved Rutherford B. Hayes, the Republican Governor of Ohio and Samuel J. Tilden, the Democratic Governor of New York.

Election Results • Tilden won the popular vote. • Tilden won the electoral vote with 184 votes and Hayes with 165. • 20 votes were un-counted.
Controversy Each candidate claimed that they won Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina. The Republican voters of these three states were subject to racial threats. Electoral Commission put in place. Hayes elected through the Compromise of 1877.
