What is Zetix? • Zetix is a synthetic fabric invented by Auxetics Technologies, Ltd., a company from the UK. • It is a member of a class of fabrics called auxetics that actually become thicker when stretched out. • Zetix is a fabric so strong it will resist multiple car bomb blasts without breaking.
What isn't Zetix? • It is not a medicine or a drug (it is, but it's not our topic). • It is not a pimple cream. • It is not edible (so don't try to eat it). • It is not an alien lifeform (so don't bring it to your leader). • It is not mispelled.
Why is Zetix so awesome? • Zetix combines the very expensive high-performance materials with cheaper bulk components in a 1-to-100 ratio while maintaining the blast-resistant properties of the high-performance materials. • Not only does Zetix work work better than other blast resistant fabric, but it costs much less to produce as well.
What is Zetix composed of? • Zetix is made of: Spectra (a type of plastic) wrapped with polyester monofilament and ballistic nylon (a tough nylon fabric); but other materials may substitute, such as Kevlar.
How does Zetix work? • If you stretch a piece of bungee cord, it just gets thinner. • But if you wrap a cord around the bungee, and then stretch it, it effectively gets wider...
How does Zetix/auxetic materials work? • When two wrapped fibres are paired up, an auxetic structure is formed. • The wrapped cords can be combined into bundles, which also get fatter when stretched...
Auxetic yarns can be used to make woven or knitted fabrics...
When you take this to the micro level, you can create a fabric formed from thousands of these helically wound threads. The resulting global structure is so strong that it can dissipate the energies of multiple blasts without breaking, unlike other materials of this class. In the Micro Level...
What is Zetix used for? • Window-protection • Ballistic-fragment protection for military tents • Hurricane defense • Anti-ballistic (soft) armor (for body, vehicles, ships, aircraft, buildings, etc.) • Ropes and knots • Dental floss • ETC
What is Zetix used for? • Seat belts (Seat belts – normal seatbelts get narrower when stretched and if in an accident, it may become narrow and put more pressure onto the passenger. Zetix does the opposite, thus it is safer.) • Filtration (When a conventional net-like material is stretched, the holes close up, whereas in an auxetic version the holes open up. This can be used to create a range of objects where controlling the hole size may be important.)
