The Joseph Project In Togo, West Africa A ministry of International Missionary Outreach Fellowship Inc. www.imofinc.org
On our visit in 2008 to the remote village of Sika-Kondji in Togo, we learned of the plight of many orphans there and started the Joseph Project as a way to help the villagers better care for these children. Pastor Sika and his team started by helping with rice, school supplies and regular visits to oversee the care of the children and share the Gospel.
The village chief donated two tracts of land - one to grow crops (8 acres), and another to build an orphanage (2 acres). The vision of the Joseph Project is more than just an orphanage - it is to be a self-supporting home where Christian principles and love are taught and demonstrated. In early 2009 even the orphans helped clear the land and plant seeds.
The field produced good corn harvests in both 2009 and 2010 which greatly helped feed the orphans. Finally in early 2011 funds started to come in to begin construction on the orphanage compound. Many villagers obtained work helping with the building – even women brought water from the river to help make mud bricks.
Work has been slow as there is still no road leading to the village to bring materials, but as of late August, two dormitories, bathrooms and toilets, and an open-air meeting room (still awaiting a roof) have been built. A deep well is to be drilled in February 2012 and work is underway to build a fence around the 2-acre site for protection.
Furniture and cooking utensils, chickens and goats, and other items are still needed before the orphanage can open. Corn must be planted again, along with a kitchen garden; and a special opening ceremony is planned – hopefully for March 2011. Many local government officials and chiefs from surrounding villages will be invited as the JP has attracted much interest – so it will be a great witness and opportunity to share what God has done.
The Joseph Project We only need another $4,000 to finish and be able to open the orphanage! If you would like to help with this exciting project, pick up a leaflet and speak with Shirley Davis 903-889-2233
