Whatispollution? • weheariteverydayat school. So whatisit? • Pollutionoccurswhenpollutants contaminate the naturalsurroundings • Pollutantsare the keyelements or components of pollutionwhich are generallywastematerials of differentforms. • Pollutiondisturbsourecosystem and the balance in the environment. With modernization and development in ourlivespollutionhasreacheditspeak; giving rise to global warming and human illness. • Pollutionoccurs in differentforms; air, water, soil, radioactive, noise, heat/ thermal and light. • Everyform of pollutionhastwosources of occurrence; the point and the non-pointsources. Letusdiscuss the differenttypes of pollutions, theircauses and effects on mankind and the environmentas a whole.
Air pollution Air pollution: the release of chemicals and particulatesinto the atmosphere. Common gaseouspollutants include carbon monoxide, sulfurdioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and nitrogenoxidesproduced by industry and motorvehicles. Photochemicalozone and smog are createdasnitrogenoxidesand hydrocarbonsreact to sunlight.
Litterpollution • Litterconsists of wasteproductsthathavebeendisposedimproperly, withoutconsent, at an inappropriate location. Litter can also be usedas a verb. To littermeans to drop and leaveobjects, often man-made, suchasaluminumcans, cardboard boxes or plasticbottles on the ground and leavethemthereindefinitely or for others to dispose of asopposed to disposing of themproperly. Large and hazardousitems of rubbishsuchastires, electricalappliances, electronics, batteries and large industrial containers are sometimesdumped in isolatedlocations, suchasnationalforests and other public land.
Water pollution • Water pollutionis the contamination of water bodies(e.g.lakes,rivers,oceans,aquifer and groundwater), usuallyas a result of human activities. Water pollutionisone of manytypes of pollutionwhichresults from contaminantsbeingintroducedinto the naturalenvironment. Pollutioncausesadversechange. Water pollutionisoftencaused by the discharge of inadequatelytreatedwastewaterintonaturalbodies of water. This can lead to environmentaldegradation of aquaticecosystems. In turn, this can leadtopublichealthproblems. For example, people living downstream may use the samepollutedriver water for drinking or bathing or irrigation.
