As soil • is affected, so will the plants. Chemical waste leakage from these industries • may occur. If toxic chemical wastes such as lead and mercury are taken up • by plants, this will poison marine animals, and thus, poisoning consumers at • top of food chain. This is due to the fact that the toxic wastes will pass • through food chains and accumulate in larger concentrations in the consumers • at higher feeding levels. Due to the sheer amount of visitors, littering has become a prevalent problem. This problem is compounded with the arrival of the pilgrims numbering up to 130,000 during the 9th day of the 9th month in the Chinese lunar calendar. Regular visitors who litter without qualm on the beaches also contribute. This has resulted in swaths of the beach being covered with litter. Certain marine creatures, may mistake the litter for food and consume them, this litter could potentially be lethal, as it may choke them or clog their oesophagus. Thus, we can see that when plastic enters the food chain, it builds up affecting all the organisms. Fishing nets can also snare marine life, strangulating them to death, or unable to swim and thus drown. Suggestions Suggestions Suggestions: 1. The government could encourage plants to treat the chemical wastes before dumping them into the sea. 2. Encourage companies to reduce sulphur dioxide emission before combustion is by burning coal with low sulphur content. 3. Treat the gases *React the sulphur dioxide with limestone to produce the less harmful carbon dioxide. CaCO3 + SO2 + H2O + O2 CaSO3 + CaSO4 + CO2 + H2O Suggestions: 1. The government can impose higher fines on recalcitrant litter bugs, or even handing them an exclusive order, preventing them from landing on the island and causing further damage. 2. The government can also place more rubbish bins around areas frequented by tourists. Doing so will remove the hassle of finding a rubbish bin, thus preventing them from littering. 3. The government could also hire workers to carry weekly beach clean-ups. Apart from that they could engage students to do it as part of their ‘community involvement program’.
