Task for Today • For today you read about the emergence of the Lost Cause Mythology in the South after the Civil War. • Our goal is to understand: • What is this myth? • Where did the myth come from? • What effect did the myth have on Reconstruction?
Understanding the Lost Cause Myth • Identify 3-5 themes of the Lost Cause Myth. For each theme: • Name it (2-4 word title) • What was the view of/ argument the theme made about the Civil War? • How did the theme shape the practice/ interpretation of Reconstruction? • Summarize the theme in an image (optional)
Evaluating the Lost Cause Myth • Discuss the following questions with your group: • Why did the Lost Cause Mythology emerge? (Cause) • Was it more about the Civil War or Reconstruction? • How did the Lost Cause Mythology impact the course of Reconstruction? (Effect) • For example: How did it justify the new racial segregation of the south? How did it justify black poverty?
