  3. Sociological Foundation Race is a Myth= fabrication of the human mind. To Myth Race to Reality • Two Myths • First Myth: The idea that any race is superior to others . • Language = no race to superior to anther. • Second Myth: “Pure” race exist. • Race= Characteristics of humans. • As humans we see one another in color and shape. • Skin color= Black, Yellow, White, Brown and Red • Eye color= Blue, Brown and Green • Lip shape= Thick or Thin • Hair= Straight, Curly, Kinky, and in color shades of brown.

  4. Genocide“Ethnic Cleansing” Book Definition: the systematic annihilation or attempted annihilation of a people because of their presumed race or ethnic group

  5. Hitler& The Holocaust • Act of racial superiority • Aryans were the supposed “superior” group • Killed around 6 million people • Jews, Slavs, gypsies and disabled all fell victim to Hitler’s wrath • Avoid “Racial contamination”

  6. Hutus v. Tutsi • In 1994, the Hutus slaughtered over 800,000 Tutsis • Killed mostly with machetes • Killed Tutsis regardless of age or sex

  7. Why& Who? • Those who committed genocide were average citizens • “Labels are powerful forces in human life” • separate their acts from their sense of being good and moral people

  9. European Americans(WASPS) • White Anglo-Saxon Protestants • Settled the colonies • Dominant Group • Ethnocentric

  10. Latinos and African-Americans • 49 Million in the USA • Speak Spanish • Table 12.1 • Slaves, Treated bad • Civil Rights Movement • Racism • Race or Social Class? • African-Americans today are viewed differently, in a good way

  11. Asian Americans and Native Americans • Discriminated • Successful in the USA • Genocide • Population Transfer • HATED in the 1800’s
