  3. Metaphor Comparing two things without using like or as. Ex. His head is a watermelon.

  4. Hyperbole Using exaggeration to make a point. Ex. I am so thirsty I could drink a river.

  5. Onomatopoeia Sound word Ex. The baby went boo-hoo.

  6. Alliteration Repetition of beginning sound Ex. Boring bats bother girls.

  7. Personification Giving human qualities to something not human Ex. The fish nibbled at our ankles.

  8. Idiom A well known expression that does not mean what it mean Ex. It’s raining cats and dogs.

  9. Practice Problems • The pan went click clank. • Her room is as messy as at rat nest. • His ears are so big he can fly away. • His hair is bone white. • Boring boys bring home bacon. • If the shoe fits wear it. • The elephant said hi when I walked by.
