Parts of a Flower stamen male female
Procedures You and your partner will be given one flower 1. Draw your flower adding color and label the sepals and petals 2. Using your scalpel, very carefully, make a vertical incision to open your flower. 3. Draw your flower and label the anther, stamen, filament, stigma, style, ovary, and pistil. 4. Using your ruler, measure the length of the pistil in mm. Record your data in Table 1 5. Measure the length of the filament in (mm) Record your data and repeat for all filaments. 6. Measure the length of all anther s in (mm) Record your data 7. The anthers may be releasing pollen. Look for a powdery residue. 8. Look inside the ovary. See if you can find the ovules. When fertilized, these will become seeds. 9. Record the lengths of the pistil and filament on the class stem and leaf. 10. Calculate data, answer questions.

Analysis • Name the female parts of your flower. • Name the male parts of your flower • In your flower, which was longer? • According to our class data table, which had the longer lengths? • Was your flower releasing pollen and if so how could you tell? • Was your flower mature? (open or closed) • Why would having a longer pistil or stamen be an advantage in pollination? • Give an example of length being a disadvantage.
