Tourism: Current Sources, Analysis & Uses of Data • Number of Foreign Visitors • Length of Stay • Average Spend / Consumption patterns • Origin of Visitor • Purpose of Visit • Mode of Travel • Port of Entry • Direct Employment in the Formal Tourism Sector • Revenues for Natural & Cultural Assets • FDI in the Tourism Sector • FORMAL SECTOR SUPPLY-SIDE • Airlines • Accommodation • Tour Operators and Travel Agencies • Natural and Cultural Attraction Entries DEMAND-SIDE Immigration Statistics Expenditure and Motivation / Exit surveys Market Surveys • THIS DATA IS USED BY CENTRAL BANKS TO: • Establish Foreign Exchange Earnings • Establish Tourism’s Contribution to GDP • AND BY TOURISM PLANNERS (NATIONALS • AND CONSULTANTS) TO: • Develop Destination Master Plans • Develop Destination Marketing Plans • Develop Policies and Strategies for Tourism Development THE CURRENT TOURISM SECTOR DIAGNOSTIC FRAMEWORK OFFERS MACROPLANNING OPTIONS
The problems with this macro-level data and planning are: Markets and selling on the DEMAND-SIDE is not organized according to PURPOSE OF VISIT but by MOTIVATION FOR TRAVEL The SUPPLY-SIDE is significantly more diverse than currently represented: Formal and Informal enterprises, goods and services directly connected to tourism, those indirectly connected and those whose consumption is boosted by tourists (e.g. telecoms, retail, medical, and banking services) Tourism’s POLITICAL ECONOMY is weak and macro-level planning is difficult to implement Governments are decentralizing and macro data and planning loses relevancy when decision-making, budgets and development accountability are more localized Current data sources do not consider DOMESTIC consumption
Alternative Benchmarks: Percentage and quantification of domestic consumption vs. foreign consumption Percentage and quantification of import reliance (leakages) Employment multipliers Income multipliers Percentage and quantification market segmentation at the destination level Quantification of tourism enterprise related tax revenues
