8. Conventional Why did you pick this career? I liked the order and methodology of Accounting. Also the ability to exercise my analytical muscle and the knowledge that this career choice would give me a marketable skill that I could take in a number of different directions.

I felt this role was best fitting for me where it worked with my personality, organization skills, communication skills, and interest. I've always had interest in planning/organizing and Office Management is close to it. Being in a role that works behind the scenes allows you to see things differently that would help not only yourself as a person but within the firm that others may not see. I face challenges every day at my job, but that's what keeps it fun and interesting. I want to get challenged because that's how I develop my skills and grow as a person. Enterprising Field: Business Title: Business Owner Question: Why did you pick this career? I wanted more for my family and wanted to show my children that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

13. Field: Business Title: Self-Employed Question: What are specific challenges for women in your career field? The main challenge is failure. You're expected to fail but it's what you do with the failure that determines your success. You have to learn to keep going past the failure and see what you can do to improve. There's always room for improvement. Enterprising Field: Finance Title: District Leader Question: What education or training did you need? In order to enter this type of field, I was required to take some courses and pass a provincial exam. Much of the training was subsidized by the company. This opportunity also allows you to learn through a trainer who is there with you step by step.

15. Field: Nonprofit/Social Services Title: Social Worker Question: What’s most challenging about your job? The most challenging part about working in Social Services is not being able to help everyone. With this area of work it is difficult to reach people sometimes and it can be really tough but it's important to realize that you are doing your best. Social Field: Health Care/Medical Title: Direct Support Professional/Nurse Question: What education or training did you need? I slowly increased education over time. When I first started in was only required to have a high school diploma. I then went to a vocational program for my Licensed Practical Nursing certificate and continued at a local community college for my Registered Nursing degree which I have an associate's in. Case Management usually requires a Bachelor's Degree which I'm still working on, but I have special certification to work with folks with intellectual disabilities.

16. Field: Nonprofit/Social Services Title: Social Worker Question: If someone wanted to do what you do, what piece of advice would you give? I would say the most important piece of advice for someone wanting to become a Social Worker or wanting to do any Social Services job is that you have to have heart. You have to want to help someone, you can't be in this career field for the money. You have to meet the clients where they are in life, love them through their struggle and past it and really want to help them and be there for them. Social Field: Education Title: High School English Teacher Question: What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy facilitating critical thinking, helping students make personal and global connections, as well as find their voice.

17. Investigative I discovered my interest in science and research when one of my female professors during my undergrad asked me if I wanted to do research in her lab. I was testing cancer drugs, doing my own cell cultures, and learning how to use very cool equipment. My professor at a summer program later asked me to join his group for a PhD after my undergrad. I chose a thesis topic in the pharmaceutical field and that was how I eventually landed my job in a pharmaceutical company. Why did you pick this career?

You must be driven in your career goal because obstacles will arise so without perseverance it will be very difficult to succeed. Investigative Field: Marketing Title: Data Analyst Question: Why did you pick this career? It's like a treasure hunt! Data analysis/marketing helps my company understand what their customers want and care about. This helps them produce products that people want.

19. Field: Pharmaceutical Title: Researcher Question: What are specific challenges for women in your career field? The main challenges when working in research and development in a science field are 1) the lack of women mentors: the research field is dominated by males and therefore it can be difficult for women to speak up. 2) work/ life balance: my female colleagues find it very difficult to be have both a successful career and a personal life. Many debate about whether they should delay to have children, whether pregnancy will affect their promotion cycle, etc. Investigative Field: Science Title: Food Scientist Question: What do you most enjoy about your job? I really enjoy the challenge of developing something new that meets the needs of the consumer - it combines the scientific side with the creative side.

For my career, I believe a lot of on the job training supersedes my schooling; however, I received my college degree with a concentration in design and from there have learned everything in the field. Artistic Field: Media/Journalism/Newspaper Title: Assistant @ Talent Agency Question: Why did you pick this career? I'm an avid reader, film buff, and a self-proclaimed TV critic. So much work goes into creating all those mediums and I wanted to help foster the talented people that write the material. This industry is great because if you believe something/someone is talented and worthwhile, you can help them spread their work.

In my photography, I love to capture that magical moment in time, whether it's perfect light at sunset, a poignant look on someone's face, or the gritty realism that is life all around us. In my writing, I especially enjoy sharing stories that educate, inform, and enlighten people to make a difference in the world by getting involved. Not many women make it to the top for various reasons such as discouragement, respect, or politics.

23. Realistic Why did you pick this career? This career offered a solid wage, free training, annuity, pension and health insurance. I have always been fascinated with hardware stores, tools, and various DIY projects.

I started working at an entry level meter reading position that didn't require any prior experience or education. On the job experience, hard work and positive attitude has got me where I am today. Engineering is a male dominated field, especially in manufacturing. Women need to navigate that environment with limited female mentors.

It puts myself in a position to help others when they are unable to help themselves, which is an honor and a sacred trust that I love about the job. Realistic Field: Skilled Labor - Trades Title: Electrician Question: What are specific challenges for women in your career field? We are a minority and stand out on the job. Therefore, we are more under the microscope. It is more difficult to gain job experience because we can get pigeonholed into physically less challenging and more monotonous jobs. Sometimes we have to be pushy to get the experience we need.
