Cells, Tissues, & Organs From the cell to organ systems
Cell specialization • All multicellular organisms begin life as a single cell • Through a process called cell differentiationstem cells develop into specialize cells
Types of Specialized Cells In the human body
Muscle cells • Long and thin structure • Can change size when they contract • High concentration of mitochondria to supply energy when they change shape
Nerve Cell • Structure: long, threadlike branches • Allows cells to receive and transmit signals from other cells throughout the body
Red Blood Cells • Structure: donut-like shape, with a depression instead of a hole at the centre • Provides lots of surface area to carry oxygen
Bone Cell • Structure: framework of hard materials • Contains minerals that provide strength and support, and hold the cell together
Skin Cell • Structure: thin and flat, form in layers of cells • Creates a barrier that keeps invaders out and moisture in
Four Types of Tissues In the human body
Organs • Different kinds of tissues working together for a specific task are called organs • Organs come work with other organs in the body to form organ systems • These organ systems are all interconnected, so if there is a problem with one system, this will affect several other systems in the body
