Introduction How can we contribute to fight Hunger? • World hunger refers to the want or scarcity of food in a country, aggregated to the world level which is referring as malnutrition. • Why “United against Hunger”? • To recognise the efforts made in the fight against world hunger at National, Regional and International levels (FAO, 2010). • Humanitarian actions • Encouraging people to have a kitchen garden through awareness campaigns • Providing school meals to poor children • Training farmers and connect them to markets • Nourishing children with the right food at the right time • Empowering women • Using technology to revolutionize the face of hunger • Building resiliency of vulnerable communities • Exploring the power of new communication tools to build a global community of hunger-fighters • Showing Leadership Hunger in the World • There are 925 million hungry people in the world (FAOstat, 2010). • Most of the World’s hungry live in developing countries. • 1 out of 7 people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. • Hunger and malnutrition are the main causes of health problems (greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined). Causes of Hunger • Poverty trap • Significant increase in food prices • Over-exploitation of the environment • Neglectof Agriculture, which is relevant to very poor people, by Governments and International agencies • Current worldwide economic crisis • Land scarcity • Natural calamities • Climate Change • Food crisis • War Conclusion • The Millennium Development Goal 1 calls for halving the hungry people in the world by 2015 • Food production will have to increase by 70% to feed a population of 9 billion in 2050 • These can be achieved through partnership with Governments, Research Institutes and Universities, farmers’ associations and pressure groups, the UN system, civil society and the private sector (FAO, 2010) FAO Stat, 2010
