2.4 SOLVING MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS STEPS TO SOLVING MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS THE GOAL IS TO GET THE VARIABLE BY ITSELF Work backwards in order of operations. Change all subtraction signs to addition by adding the opposite of the number. Add the opposite of the number on the side of the variable first. Multiply by the reciprocal of the number that is being multiplied by the variable. Check your answers by plugging it into the original equation.
2.4 SOLVING MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS EXAMPLE 1 2A – 6 = 18 2a + (-6) = 18 Rewrite as addition problem (6) + 2a + (-6) = 18 + (6) Add the opposite to both sides 2a = 24The new problem (1/2) (2a) = (24) (1/2) Multiply by the reciprocal of 2 A = 12Does 2 (12) – 6 = 18?
2.4 SOLVING MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS 2/5x – 4 = 8 • 24 • 10 • 30 • 1 0
2/5x – 4 = 82/5x + (-4) = 8(4) + 2/5x +(-4) = 8 + 42/5x = 125/2(2/5x)=12(5/2) x = 30
2.4 SOLVING MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS Since the whole quantity of n + 1 is being divided by 2 we must get it out of being a fraction first by multiplying by 2 n + 1 = 15 -2 (-2) (n + 1) = (15) (-2) -2 n + 1 = -30 (-1) + n + 1 = -30 + (-1) N = -31 ASK: What number divided by -2 is equal to 15?
2.4 SOLVING MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS x + 10 = 5 3 • -5 • 25 • 5 • -25 ( ) • X + 10 = (5) 3 • 3 • x + 10 = 15 • -10 + x + 10 = 15 + -10 • X = 5 :00
What is the first step in a multi-step equation to solve? • Add the opposite to both sides • Multiply by the reciprocal • Check your answers • Rewrite subtraction as addition
