  2. Who is he? • Charlie Chaplin was an English film actor, director, producer, writer, and composer! • One of his appearances was in “The Little Tramp” when he wore a gentlemen’s derby, a cane, and a neatly kept mustache with baggy trousers and oversized shoes.

  3. Special Info • He had a granddaughter who was the actress Dolores Chaplin. • Born on April 16th, 1889 and died on December 25th, 1997.

  4. Special Info (cont.) • Charlie spent most of his early childhood with his mother, and singer, Hannah Hall. • Charlie made his first stage debut at age 5, filling in (taking) his mother’s spot after losing her voice.

  5. Accomplishments • Became a professional entertainer in 1897 (age 8) when he joined the Eight Lancashire Lads, a clog-dancing act. • Played a small role in William Gillette's Sherlock Holmes and a stint with the act of “Casey’s Court Circus”.

  6. Accomplishments (cont.) • His first one-reeler was “Making a Living” that was made in 1914. • Charlie Chaplin was signed to appear in Muck Sennet's Keystone Comedy films. “Making a Living” being the first.

  7. Success • Some of Charlie’s movie acting roles were starring in “The Tramp”, “Burlesque on Carmen”, “The Rink”, “Easy Street”, “One A.M.” and MANY others. • He moved to an even better job in which he made $670,000/year in the 1910s and 20s (about $67,000,000 today!)

  8. Charlie was married four different times. • He played as “The Tramp” in almost all of his movie/acting roles.

  9. Marriage • Charlie’s second wife, Lita, was 12 years old when they first met. • They had 2 children named Charles Jr. and Sydney. They got married when they were 16 years old 1924. They soon divorced 3 years later.

  10. Special Honors • In 1975, Charlie was knighted (became a “Sir”) by Queen Elizabeth II just before his 86th birthday. • After being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975, Charlie died of natural causes at 4 a.m. At the time, he was married to his wife Oona.

  11. Death • Charlie died of old age (same as natural causes) and was a peaceful and calm death. • Lady Chaplin wanted the funeral to be private and restricted to the family. The burial would be held in Switzerland however.

Marriage and Death (Charles Sr.) • The Chaplin marriage between Hannah and Charles ended after Hannah was caught having an affair that resulted in the birth of a son fathered by Leo Dryden, another Music Hall singer. • At age 37, Charles Chaplin Sr. died from illness from stemming alcohol. Charlie’s 4 Wives • Charlie had 4 wives; Mildred Harris being the first, Lita Grey being second, Paulette Goddard being third, and Oona O’Neil being his forth. • Mildred (1st) Harris and Charlie got married on November 26th, 1924. They had one son named Norman Chaplin who, sadly died three days after birth. The couple divorced in 1927.

  17. Charlie’s 4 Wives (cont.) • Lita Grey (2nd) was shown in slide #9. • Paulette Goddard (3rd) and Charlie got married on a trip near Japan and China in 1936. They made 2 films together “Modern Times” and “The Great Dictator”. Divorced 6 years later in 1942.

Charlie’s 4 Wives (last) • Oona O’Neil (4th) became married to Charlie in June, 1943 and had 8 children between 18 years. • The 8 children were Geraldine Chaplin (August 1st, 1944), Michael Chaplin (March 7th, 1946), Josephine (March 28th, 1949), Victoria (May 19th, 1951), Eugene (August 23rd, 1953) Jane (May 23rd, 1957), Annette (December 3rd, 1959) and finally Christopher (July 8th, 1962) Charlie had a total of 11 children between his 4 wives.
