  1. GLOBAL POPULATION GROWTH

  2. GLOBAL POPULATION GROWTH • Describe the growth of population between 1000 AD to 2000 AD. Suggest reasons for its growth.

  3. Natural increase is due to • BIRTH RATE – number of live births per 1000 people per year • DEATH RATE - number of deaths per 1000 people per year

  4. Before 1700 - Very slow growth Cause: – high birth rate • Early marriages … more reproductive years of women • Lack of information on family planning • Traditions … sons preferred … heirs • Mainly agricultural … need labour on farm • High infant mortality rate Cause: - High death rate • Wars, famines, diseases

  5. Between 1700 – 1900 - Gradual growth • Causes – high birth rate - falling death rate

  6. Post 1900s – to present day • Very rapid growth / population explosion • Causes – high birth rate - low death rate

  7. Causes of low death rate • Better medical care …more doctors, nurses improved medicine for diseases; mass vaccination for babies • Improved hygiene …provision of flushed toilets … better sewerage disposal system • More food supply …factories producing more quantities of food … farmers use better food production methods

  8. More developed countries Slower growth (low birth rate, low death rate) Less developed countries Very rapid growth (high birth rate Low death rate) Population growth of

  9. Causes of Low Birth Rate • Late marriages …women going to work • Industrialisation and urbanisation … people don’t work on the farms … don’t require farm hand / labour on the farms • Knowledge of family planning measures eg the Pill, use of contraceptives • More people choose to remain single

  10. Demographic Terms • Birth rate – number of live births per 1000 people per year • Death rate – number of deaths per 1000 people per year • Natural increase occurs when birth rate is greater than death rate • Natural decrease occurs when birth rate is less than death rate • Zero population growth – Birth rate is equal to death rate

  11. Demographic Terms • Infant mortality rate – total number of deaths in a year among infants under one year of age for every 1000 live births • Life expectancy – average number of years that a person living in a particular area can be expected to live
