  6. Power of Nature • Natural forces cannot be controlled by humans

  7. Alienation and Isolation • A character is separated (physically or psychologically) from society.

  8. Honoring the historical past • Pays tribute to actual events or situations

  9. Good Overcoming Evil • The good guys win

  10. Tolerance of the atypical • The misfit is accepted by others

  11. Survival of the fittest • The strongest and/or smartest win

  12. Coming of age • A young person says goodbye to childhood and takes on the responsibilities of adulthood

  13. Power of love • A character changes in a significant way or does an extraordinary act because of his/her love for another

  14. Loss of innocence • An “innocent” learns by firsthand experience that the world is not always good.

  15. Struggle with self • Character must overcome a significant internal conflict such as making a difficult decision or dealing with an emotional challenge

  16. Disillusionment with life • Character believes that there is no hope and quits trying to achieve his/her goal (or gives up on life altogether).
