  1. Rates of Chemical Reactions

  2. Kinetics • Study of reaction rates

  3. Reaction Rate • How quickly reactants turn into products

  4. Collision Theory • In order for bonds to form, atoms must collide • If you increase the rate and number of collisions occurring, you’ll speed up the reaction rate.

  5. Four factors that affect reaction rate • Concentration • Surface area • Temperature • Catalyst

  6. Concentration

  7. Explain what you think will happen and why? • An antacid tablet placed in cold water, another placed in hot water. • The reaction will happen faster in hot water, because the atoms of the reactants absorb the heat energy, and start moving faster. This causes the collisions to occur faster, which speeds up the rate of chemical reaction (how fast reactants turn into products)

  8. Explain what you think will happen and why? • A mixture of baking powder, flour, sugar, and eggs is placed in the oven.

  9. Explain what you think will happen and why? • Charcoal bricks are broken into smaller pieces, before being placed on the grill. • The reaction will speed up because there is more surface area exposed. Therefore the reaction will occur faster

  10. Explain what you think will happen and why? • Bellows are used on a fire in the fireplace. • The reaction will speed up, because you are increasing the concentration of one of the reactants (oxygen).

  11. Explain what you think will happen and why? • A solution of lye is made more concentrated before being applied to a clogged drain. • The drain will unclog better, because increasing the concentration will cause the reaction to occur more quickly.

  12. Explain what you think will happen and why? • What will burn faster – a whole log or a log chopped into pieces? Why? • The chopped log will burn faster because of increased surface area.

  13. Explain what you think will happen and why? • What will burn faster, chopped wood or sawdust? • Sawdust, because of increased surface area.

  14. Explain what you think will happen and why? • Why do we put food in the refrigerator? • To slow down the movement of the atoms, which slows down the rate of chemical reaction

  15. What is kinetics? • What does the collision theory state? • What are the four things that can affect the rate of chemical reactions?
