2014 – 2015 8 th Grade Advanced Social Studies. Class Description. Social Studies 8 focuses on a combination of Kansas history and U.S. history. Students will gain knowledge of the people and events that have impacted our nation.

Class Description • Social Studies 8 focuses on a combination of Kansas history and U.S. history. • Students will gain knowledge of the people and events that have impacted our nation. • Students will work on developing a variety of skills including analyzing primary sources, interpreting maps, analyzing graphs, and communicating their knowledge both verbally and in writing. • As an advanced course, we will cover the same material as other 8th Grade history classes but in a way that will go into more depth and extend the curriculum to help prepare the student for honors and AP courses in high school

Communication • Availability: Mr. Olson has duty every Monday, whether morning or afternoon will vary by month. I am also not available Tuesday mornings or Thursday afternoons. Grading • Tests: Will be based on a number of sources of information, but primarily on in-class notes. Unless otherwise stated, these will be the most effective source of study materials for tests.

Integer Grading • Grading • Projects will count as 25% of the overall grade and Summative Assessments will count as 75%. They will be entered into the gradebook as follows: • 4 = Mastery • 3 = Proficient • 2 = Inconsistent • 1 = Emerging • 0 = No Evidence • M = Missing (not yet attempted or completed)
Formative Assessments: • Y = Yes, the student completed the work correctly. • N = No. Homework was completed unsuccessfully or not done at all. • I = Incomplete or Inconsistent (homework was partially completed correctly) • M = Missing (not yet attempted or completed) • OR • 4, 3, 2, 1 marked No Count in the grade book
Discipline Procedures • Minor infractions of classroom rules will be dealt with in accordance with the severity or repetitiveness of the infraction. • Most commonly this will begin with a verbal warning and/or a brief in-class conference. • Should the infraction require further action there may be a follow up conference during a 20 minute detention. • Major infractions of school rules and excessively repeated infractions of minor infractions will result in an office referral.
