  1. Body/Mind Movement Therapy A Western Cultural Perspective Brian J. Piccolo, BA, MA, NCTMB

  2. INTRODUCTION

  3. Body Mind Dualism In the Far East there is no separation between body and mind with regards to psychology or philosophy. A separation of Body and Mind begins for the West in the Middle East through various Religious movements. Finally, during the rise of Christianity during the height of the Roman Empire, Body-Mind Dualism increased in the European nations. The repression of the Pagan-Nature religions by the Roman Church contributed to this dualism.

  4. Body Mind Dualism Rene Descartes (1596-1650) convinced the leaders of the Church in France that the mind/soul is separate from the body. Therefore, scientists could experiment in physics while the mind or soul was left for the Church. Descartes wanted to avoid what happened to Galileo from ever happening to him. This Mind-Body Dualism has remained in Western culture even until now. Some progress has been made, but we have a ways to still go.

  5. SCIENCE Enter Rene Descartes (1597-1650 AD) Mind is for the Church Matter is for Science RELIGION Western Dualism is Born Again THE GREAT DIVORCE cogito ergo sum (Latin: "I think, therefore I am")

  6. WESTERNREDEMPTION&PROGRESS

  7. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) • Father of Psychotherapy • Theory of the Ego, Id, and Super Ego • Repression Theory • The Subconscious • Sexual Repression • The Oedipus Complex Sometimes a Cigar, is just a Cigar!

  8. Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957) • Orgasm Theory • Character Analysis • Muscle Armoring • Orgone Energy • Orgone Accumulators • Cloud Buster Perceived the ID as Sexual Energy

  9. Carl G. Jung (1875-1961) • Collective Unconscious • Mandala Symbolism • Dream Therapy • Universal Archetypes • The Self as the Center Perceived Psychic Energy as Core Energy

  10. Alexander Lowen (1910 - 2008) • Father of Bioenergetics • Worked with Reich • Wrote 14 Books • Created a whole system of exercises. Chronic muscular tensions disturbs emotional health.

  11. Conditions of Muscular Armoring When we are armored, we trade the freedom of spontaneous reaction and the fullness of our natural feelings and thoughts for a mute deadness and numbness. Sometimes armoring is temporarily useful, as when a child is hurt and holds its breath to diminish the pain. But if this armoring is allowed to continue untreated, the child will learn that it lessens the intensity of feeling and to protect itself the child will continue to use armoring as a form of pain-killer. In summary, armoring distorts us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In so doing, it blocks us from more rewarding and productive lives.

  12. John Pierrakos (1921-2001) • Father of Core Energetics • Worked with Lowen • Met Eva Broch 1967 • She inspired him to create Core Energetics 1971 • Eva created Pathwork Ctr. • Barbara Brennan took Eva’s classes. There is a spiritual side to a human being beyond the concepts of Bio-Energetics.

  13. CELLULAR MEMORY

  14. What is Cellular Memory? • Cellular memory is the ability of the bodies cells to retain their own memory of eventsand personal traumas. • Cellular memory is independent of the brains memory system but works with it. • Cellular memory can contribute to muscle armoring. • Cellular memory is apparently transferable between people via organ transplants.

  15. Dr. Paul Pearsall • In 1998, Dr. Pearsall documents cellular memory in his book The Hearts Code. • A murdered heart transplant donor’s killer is identified by the recipient of the new heart herself. • This book is a must read for all body-workers. Documented Case Study of Cellular Memory

  16. Julie Motz • Julie Motz’s book Hands of Life is a break through book on energy work and cellular memory. • She has participated in may heart transplants. • Through energy work she was able to communicate with cells of a donor heart that did not want to live. Motz worked with cancer patients & organ transfers pts.

  17. John F. Barnes, PT • Barnes is the innovator of Myofascial Release. • He found that memories can be stored in the fascia and that they can be released. • He calls this release process an “unwinding” of the fascia. Barnes needed unwinding himself for business.

  18. Dr. John Upledger • Upledger is the innovator of Craniosacral Therapy. His key book is: The Inner Physician and You. • Upledger also discovered emotional memories lodged within the bodies cells. • Somato-Emotional Release was the resultant discipline he designed to alleviate this condition. Upledger worked with Dolphins and Energy Healing.

  19. Dr. Marion Woodman • Woodman is a Jungian analyst the specializes in female psychology and addictions. The Pregnant Virgin. • Woodman uses movement therapy to force the body to release its repressed emotions. • She gets around her patients ego defense mechanisms with dance. Woodman’s work is mainly working with addictions.

  20. Organ TransplantCase Studies&Anecdotal Reports

  21. Case #1 • An 18-year old young man , who liked poetry, music, and singing, died in a car accident. • His heart was transplanted into an 18-year old girl. • The operation was successful; after recovery she met the parents of that deceased  young man. • She surprisingly played the same music and sang the same song that he used to play. • She played and sang completing the song till its very ending even though she had not heard it before!

  22. Case #2 • A 47 -year old man had a transplantation of a heart from a 17- year old man. • The recipient was surprised after the operation because he started to like classical music. • He  discovered later that his donor used to like that kind of music too!

  23. Case #3 • After a young man had had a heart transplantation. • He discovered that he started to use a strange word that he did not use before. • After he had met the wife of the donor, he found that she and her husband used to use this word as a code between them, and that it indicated that everything is OK!

  24. Case #4 • A heart transplant was done on an eight -year old girl. • The heart was taken from a ten- year old girl who was stabbed to death in her lung (her heart was unscathed). • About 2 months after she got the heart, she began to have horrible nightmares. She began to describe someone coming out of the shade  and stabbing her. • She got to the point that in her dreams she actually could see the man. She identified him, she told the police where to go get him, and on arresting the man, he confessed!

  25. CurrentBody Therapies

  26. Gabriel Roth • Gabriel Roth is a dance movement therapist. • She teaches people to discover their own dance • Her most famous DVD’s are, The Wave and Sweat Your Prayers.

  27. Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais (1904-1984) • The Feldenkrais Method is an educational system intended to give a greater functional awareness of the self. • The method uses movement and awareness as the primary vehicle for learning. • It is perhaps due to this focus on physical movements that the Feldenkrais Method is often classified as a complementary and alternative medicine.

  28. Final Thoughts

  29. Please Seek a Balanced View • Cellular memory has truly been rediscovered by the West as shown in this PPT. • Most Americans live in their heads rather than their bodies. This is not wrong, just incomplete. • Getting in touch with our bodies and our cellular memory is necessary for holistic health. • However, this does not mean that all clinical mental psychology work is null and void. For it is not. • There are many physically active people who lack the conscious head knowledge and information necessary for a completed healthy life. Just look at some of our athletes. • Always seek a health balance between the brain and the body. We cannot be healed of what we do not acknowledge.
