Like -5(5)=5(-5) (algebra) ab = ba What is The Commutative Property? The Commutative Properties of addition and multiplication can be used to make evaluating expressions using mental math easier.

Addition -20+79+(-20)= -20+79+(-20) = -20+ (-20)+79 commutative property of addition =-40+79 you could add in any order to make it easier =39 Multiplication 12 x 2 x 5= 12 x 2 x 5 = 12 x 5 x 2 commutative property ofmultiplication = 60 x 2 you could multiply in any order to make it easier =120 Examples of The Commutative Property

Numbers- (2+3) + 4 = 2 + (3+4) Multiplication: Algebra- (ab)c = a(bc) Words- Changing the grouping of factors will not change their product. Numbers- (7x4) x 5 = 7 x (4x5) What is The Associative Property? • The Associative Properties of Addition and Multiplication can be used to make evaluating expressions using mental math easier.

  5. Examples of the Associative Property Addition: (2+7) + 4 = 2 + (7+4) - Associative Property of addition = 2 + 11- add the numbers in the parentheses = 13 Multiplication: (3 x 2) x 4 = 3 x (2 x 4)- Associative Property of addition = 3 x 8-Multiply the numbers in the parentheses = 24
