  2. What are Minor Injury Services? In NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde we have • 4 ‘stand alone’ MIUs • New Stobhill Hospital • New Victoria Hospital • Vale of Leven Hospital • West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital (from June 2015 until December 2016) • Patients with minor injuries are also seen in all the Emergency Departments in • Glasgow Royal Infirmary • Queen Elizabeth University Hospital • Royal Hospital for Children • Royal Alexandra Hospital • Inverclyde Royal Hospital

  3. Minor Injuries Units (MIU) in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

  4. Temporary Closure in December 2016 • Planned for 22,000 patients a year • 11,200 seen in 2016 • Number seen in 2016 less than in 2015 • Specialist staff not used to full potential • Only service open after 5pm and at weekends at Yorkhill

  7. Which services did people choose? The chart shows which service patients from the ‘West Catchment’ post code areas chose to attend in the year prior to closure. 22% of patients attended the West MIU 43% of patients attended the QEUH

  8. Age Profile / Demographics During 2016, the West Glasgow MIU had 11,200 attendances. The total number of attendances from the West ‘catchment area’ in all of the MIU/A&E facilities was 41,700.. The age profile is broadly similar with the main difference being the under 16 years.

  9. How different is this from other MIUs? A comparison of the flow of patients associated with the catchment populations for other MIUs shows: For patients within the post code areas of the New Victoria catchment: • 45% chose to use an alternative A&E/MIU to the New Victoria MIU For patients within the post code areas of Stobhill Hospital catchment: • 48% chose to use an alternative A&E/MIU to the Stobhill MIU This compares to the experience of the West MIU: • 78% choosing an alternative A&E/MIU

  10. Proximity of MIUs with EDs Within the Glasgow urban conurbation, the public have access to 3 MIUs and 2 EDs The map shows locations and also population density for the catchment areas of the 3 MIUs. Table below shows distance (miles) between each site.

  11. Patient ‘demand’ for MIU services from the West ‘Catchment’ area Average attendances to all hospitals from this area within GG&C were 587 per week, with a slight fall observable following the closure of the West MIU to an average of 525. Closure of MIU
