  2. Basic information • Target audience: Graduate Students • Summary: The results of plagiarism • Objective: To help students consider the consequences of plagiarism in graduate studies. • Length: 30 minutes

  3. Learning Outcomes • The learners will be familiar with the legal results and sanctions stemming from plagiarism. • The learners will be able to illustrate the importance of receiving training in every aspect of academic integrity.

  4. The story Black Pirate was a graduate student at Eastern Grape University. Although he was not a very successful student at the department, he was favoured by some of the faculty members due to his political connections. Moreover, he did not regularly attend graduate courses. His favourite occupation was spending his time in some faculty members’ offices gossiping about other faculty members in the department. What is worse, he falsely accused people of plagiarized their work! The story As Mr. Pirate did not attend most of his graduate classes and especially an academic writing course, he was not aware of the consequences of academic dishonesty in graduate work. He was doing his PhD at the department of Urkic language. Trusting in his political power, he plagiarized from a PhD dissertation written in Rench Land University. The only thing he did was to translate from Rench language into Urkic language and adapt it to his context. He was able to complete his thesis only in 2 months. The story Dr. Black Pirate found a very good position at Neverfail University. He continued to have bad manners there He accused other faculty members of plagiarism. He mobbed others. He suppressed others by using his political connections when they complained. One day, a clever academic searched Dr. Pirate’s academic background and found something shocking! The story • The Council of Higher Education gave a decision about Dr. Pirate’s academic dishonesty. • Finally, Mr. Pirate lost his position and his PhD was rescinded. • None of his connections provided any support for him. Questions for discussions • Do you think that Mr. Pirate’s advisor and the thesis committee also should have been held responsible for this academic dishonesty? • Do you think that thesis advisors should be trained in fighting against academic dishonesty on a regular basis? If so, how? • What else could have been done to prevent this case? • What would you have done differently if you were Mr. Pirate’s thesis advisor?
