Object/Action Analysis • The Teacher Prep website provides access to a variety of online resources for Alabama Teachers. The site provides current and prospective Alabama teachers with information on initial teacher certification, continuing education, annual competency requirements, and tools designed to help with assisting students pass troublesome areas of the Alabama High School Exit Exam. Links provided on the Teacher Certification page include Alabama State Department of Education resources and information on the Praxis exam as well as the Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program. Also on the Teacher Certification page is the latest news about the future annual competency requirements that Alabama teachers will have to adhere to in order to keep their licenses current. The Continuing Education links provide information for training and courses for teachers, administrators and professional organizations. Teaching Aids are linked to sources for lesson plans and other classroom support material for various subjects.
Lexicon • ALSDE – Alabama State Department of Education • Teacher Certification – is an all-inclusive reference to requirements for initial certification, and renewal of career/technical certificates. • CEU – Continuing Education Units • Continuing Education – refers to information dealing with in class and online professional development for teachers, administrators, and professional organizations • Praxis – The Praxis series of tests are professional assessments for beginning teachers. They are a set of rigorous and carefully validated assessments that provides accurate, reliable information for use by state education agencies in making licensing decisions. • APTTP – Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program. The APTTP consists of basic skills assessments from the ACT WorkKeys System in Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information, and Writing.
Scenario #1 • Sally Price has just moved to the United States from England. She has a degree in education as well as a teacher certification obtained while in England. Sally desires to obtain a license to teach in Alabama and performs a Google search on “teacher resources in Alabama”. She comes across the Teach Alabama website and is excited to find all the information she needs there. She reads the welcome page to ascertain the goal of the website and sees a tab along the menubar at the top of the screen entitled “Certification”. When she hovers over it, she notices two items appear on a drop down menu from that tab. She clicks on the main Certification link. She notices the same two drop down links that were on the drop down menu are at the bottom of the page. She reads the Teacher Certification information on the page and learns about the Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program. She clicks on the link where she is taken to the APTTP page on the Alabama State Department of Education’s website. She reads all about it and learns what she must do to obtain her certification to teach in Alabama.
Scenario #2 • James Butler is a teacher at a school in Talapoosa County in Alabama. He is discouraged at the most recent batch of test scores that his 10th and 11th grade students achieved on the Alabama High School Exit Exam in Science. He does a search on Vivisimo.com for Alabama exit exam teaching materials and comes across the Teach Alabama website. He reads the welcome page and sees what the site is about. He then takes a look at the Teaching Aids tab at the top of the screen. He sees four subject area items drop down from a menu when hovering over the link. He decides to go to the main Teaching Aids page and reads the narrative there about the areas in which tools to help teachers are offered. He selects the Science link and from there clicks on the Education World link and is taken to their site. The biggest area of concern for his students is Physical Science and he sees the link on that page with tools in that area. Once he finds what he needs to help his students, he goes back to the Teach Alabama site and clicks on the Contact Us tab. He then leaves a comment about how useful the Teach Alabama site was in helping him find teaching materials.
