Section 5.2 Solving Linear Inequalities
An inequality is a statement containing one of the following symbols <_______________ >_______________ ≤ _______________ ≥_______________ Less than Greater Than Less than or equal Greater than or equal Linear inequalities can be solved using the same techniques you used to solve linear equations with the following exception. ****When solving an inequality, if you _______________________________________________ you must _______________________________. Multiply or divide by a negative # Flip the switch (the inequality)
Solve and give the solution using interval notation. This is interval notation. Don’t you remember from chapter 1
Example: Taxi AA charges $2 up front plus $1.25 per mile. Taxi BB charges $4 up front plus $.95 per mile. How far can you travel in Taxi AA and have a fare less than that of Taxi BB?
Example: Hotel Get-A-Way uses toilet paper with 350 sheets per roll. If it is used at a rate of 32 sheets per day, and the hotel wants to have no more than 50 sheets left on the roll when it changes the roll, how often should it change the toilet paper roll? # of sheets leftover: So the roll of toilet papers should be changed every 9 days and 9 hours (.375*24=9 hours)
