  2. SUMMARY A change in climate can pose several risks to seniors living with weak immune system or health condition. We have explained the impact of climate change on senior’s health and the ways to deal with them. Seniors are most likely to be affected by climate change due to their weak immune system and inability to adjust to the changing weather. For example, they may have heat stroke due to the glaring heat in summers while winters may make them vulnerable to flu and cold.

  3. Why Climate Change Affects Seniors Most? • Chronic illness affects the body’s normal response to heat, according to the CDC. And four out of five adults above 50 have at least one chronic illness like high blood pressure, asthma or heart disease. If they are living alone, then it becomes even more challenging them to deal with. The CDC also held prescription medications responsible as they may affect body’s ability to regulate its temperature or sweat.

  4. Heat waves • Heat waves are one of the visible consequences of global warming affecting senior citizens. • It triggers severe heat strokes and dehydration in seniors which in turn leads to serious health conditions.

Air Pollution • Air carries harmful chemicals that can damage lung tissue, reduce lung ability and inflame airways on inhaling. • As the climate starts heating up, these chemicals present in air turn worse • Climate change can promote allergens in the air as it causes a influx in pollen season.

  6. New Diseases • Considering that elders have weak immune system, they are vulnerable to • Animal • Air • Water borne diseases.

How Seniors Can Deal with Climate Change • Staying indoors during extreme heat and cold conditions • Drinking plenty of water • Limiting alcohol and caffeine consumption • Keeping their immune system strong • Maintaining personal hygiene • Staying away from infected persons • Visiting physicians for both treatment and precautions • Exploring services and agencies that help seniors meeting health care needs.
