  1. Take a blast from the past, and enter the world of the 60’s. This is the setting of The Outsiders! The 1960s

  2. Current Events of the 60’s • Presidents of the 60’s were: • John F. Kennedy & Lyndon B. Johnson • Vietnam War-1962 • Kennedy was assassinated-1963 • Civil Rights Movement- Integration • Martin Luther King assassinated- 1967 • College students protested the war • Labeled “Hippies” • Woodstock • Space Program • Cold War- Soviet Union

  3. The Economy… Compare any prices that you know • Cost of a new home: $16,500.00 • Cost of a first-class stamp: $0.04  • Cost of a gallon of regular gas: $0.31  • Cost of a dozen eggs: $0.57  • Cost of a gallon of Milk: $0.49  • Teacher’s salary: $5,174.00 (Whoa!)

  21. Chapters 1 & 2: Idioms The Outsiders is written in an informalstyle that imitates the everyday speech of the narrator, Ponyboy. The text is prepared with slangexpressions and idiomsthat are typically found in spoken language.

  22. IDIOMS An idiom is like a coded message. It communicates a special meaning to those who know the “code.” Most English-speaking people know that when Dally describes Ponyboy as “always having his nose in a book,” he merely means Pony reads a lot.

  23. Idioms continued • But imagine the confusion that such a phrase might cause a reader new to our culture. Without an understanding of our idioms, the phrase might lead that reader to believe Ponyboy has a strange habit indeed.

  24. Idioms continued • INSTRUCTIONS: Use the context clues in the following sentences to figure out the meaning of the idiom. • Context clues are the clues around the word(s) that help you figure out what it means.

  26. In your chart, write the idiom of each sentence on the LEFT and its decoded meaning on the RIGHT. • Unlike Ponyboy, Soda never cracked a book or went to the movies. EXAMPLE: IDIOM WHAT IT MEANS 1. “cracked a book” opened the book Now try the rest on your own… (NEXT SLIDE)

In your chart, write the idiom of each sentence on the LEFT and its decoded meaning on the RIGHT. • Unlike Ponyboy, Soda never cracked a book or went to the movies. • After Soda’s teasing remark, Darry stared at him a moment and then cracked a grin. • Two-Bit just couldn’t keep his mouth shut and always had to get his two-bits worth in. • Ever since seeing Ponyboy with a switchblade, the girl had looked down on him. • Cherry smiled softly at Johnny, showing that she had sized him up right. There’s more! 

He says he feels much better after. 8. Dally was just getting kicks by slashing the Shepard gang’s tires. He thought it was fun. 9. Two-Bit and Marcia were hitting it off just fine at the movies. They talked the whole time. 10. If Sylvia flirted with Johnny, Steve threatened to beat the tar out of her.
