What Makes People Listen to Us? • Relationships: People listen to us because of who we know. • Sacrifice: People listen to us because of what we have suffered. • Character: People listen to us because of our integrity.
What Makes People Listen to Us? • Insight: People listen to us because of what we know. • Transparency: People listen to us because we are transparent. • Experience: People listen to us because we’ve succeeded in the past.
What Makes People Listen to Us? • Competence: People listen to us because of our abilities and expertise. • Courage: People listen to us when we demonstrate courage. • Value: People listen to us because we make them feel that they are important to us.
Every time a leader makes a move, four outcomes can result: • The wrong action at the wrong time leads to disaster. • The right action at the wrong time brings resistance. • The wrong action at the right time is a mistake. • The right action at the right time results in success.

People who don’t know if they can reach their goals, so they’re afraid to commit. • Dropouts. People who start toward a goal but quit when the going gets tough. • All-outs. People who set goals, commit to them, and pay the price to reach them. • To improve your commitment, do the following: • Measure it. • Know what’s worth dying for.

If you want to cultivate that quality, here’s what you need to do: • Keep Improving • Follow Through with Excellence • Accomplish More than Expected • To improve your competence, do the following: • Get your head in the game. • Redefine the standards. • Find ways to improve.

#14. Problem Solving • Leaders with good problem-solving ability demonstrate five qualities: • They anticipate problems • They accept the truth • They see the big picture • They handle one thing at a time • They don’t give up a major goal when they’re down

Self-Discipline • If you want to become a leader for whom self-discipline is an asset, follow these action points: • Develop and follow your priorities • Make a disciplined lifestyle • Challenge your excuses • Remove rewards until the job is done • Stay focused on results • To improve your self-discipline do the following: • Sort out your priorities • Get rid of excuses

When Great Goes Bad For leaders, success and failure comes from: • Need for total control • Refusing to hear no • Ignoring the “experts” • Single-minded • Insensitive to others • Betrayal of trust • Overly ambitious • Over-managing • Unable to think strategically • Unable to adapt to situations
Conclusion • Keep growing. • Empower followers to do great things • A legacy is created only when a leader puts his/her organization into position to do great things without him/her.
