Relationship between Russia and the U.S. • Russia and the U.S. have been trying to improve their relationship ever since the fall of the Soviet union. • Economically • Adopting a new government • Decreasing number of weapons either country has • Treaties were signed • Money was donated • Problems started after WWII

  3. After WWII • Allies won WWII • Russia Suffered the Most • 27 million casualties • Russia was given the bigger pieces of land • They made the Eastern Bloc • The eastern bloc consisted of “Soviet Socialist Republics” • Britain thought this was a threat to their national security

  4. Fall of Soviet Union • It’s economy “crashed” • It had the 2nd largest economy in the world • U.S.A donated BILLIONS of dollars to Russia • Goal of America was to get Russia to Adopt western ideas • Market economy • Democratic gov’t

  5. START • “START” Stands for: • Strategic • Arms • Reduction • Treaty • It’s purpose was to reduce weapons of either side. (Russia & U.S.) • The first treaty was called “START I” • Reduced the amount of nukes each country had.

START (cont.) • “START II” was another arms reducing treaty. • It was also called the “De-MIRV-ing agreement” • “MIRV” stands for: • Multiple • Independently • Targetable • Re-entry • Vehicle • Russia withdrew from the treaty because the U.S. withdrew from the ABM (Anti-ballistic missile) treaty.

  7. SORT • SORT is A LOT like START • SORT means: • Strategic • Offensive • Reductions • Treaty • This is the treaty before the most recent one: • New START
