American Gothic by Grant Wood • Born and worked most of his life in Cedar Rapids, Iowa • He began drawing as a kid and designed sets for the local theater, organized art exhibitions and volunteered for a local art group • Went to art school for a short time before joining the army to paint camouflage on weaponry • After the war he taught art in his home town before teaching art at what is now the University of Iowa • Thought “Art that loses contact with the public is lost.”
American Gothic by Grant Wood Cont. • Painted “local generic subjects” featuring farmlands, townscapes and citizens of his region • Called his art Regionalism • Tried to construct a “true image of the world” based on observation as well as memory • Dressed up his sister in an apron trimmed with rickrack and his dentist in overalls and posed them in front of the “Carpenter Gothic” farmhouse • Created an image of “iconic American character” which was supposed to represent the values of the nation while in the economic crisis of the great depression
