  1. …or is it??? Localizing News For The Tomahawk, Friday Morning Live, Infinity, and Beyond!

  2. Localization… What is it? • When a reporter “localizes news,” he or she takes a distant news story and develops it to have local impact. • Think: Who is our audience? • MHS students (mostly), (but also) faculty, and staff • Think: How can we make a story interest them? • Make it apply to their lives! • BUT HOW? • Let’s take a look at some examples…

  3. Localizing Stories for OUR Audience • “Romney Leads by 4 in Post-Debate Survey” • http://news.yahoo.com/pew-romney-leads-4-post-debate-survey-200329539--politics.html • Interviewing a government teacher • Surveying all of your classes to see how many students watched the debate • “Kobe Wears Two Different Shoes” • http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/kobe-bryant-wears-two-different-shoes-during-exhibition-150253993--nba.html • Talking to students who love shoes/Kobe • What are the latest trends at MHS? • It’s CRAZY STRIPES AND POKADOTS day, Kobe! Not TWO DIFFERENT SHOES day!!! Lolz.

  4. Car Wash Benefits • http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/08/us/in-phoenix-carwashes-help-groups-raise-money.html • Recent car washes at MHS • Poll students – do they take their cars there? • Non-article examples: • Tornado damages school in Utah • Cell Phones banned from RI college campus • Groundbreaking discovery involving physics… • California private school takes vegetables off the lunch menu

  5. Now… Find stories to localize! • This week, each student will need to localize three stories. One must be national news. One must be world news. The other is your choice. • Each newspaper article should become a :45 to :60 radio news script. • Think: How will you localize it? • Who will you interview? • Where can you get more information? • At the end of the week, one script will be submitted to count towards a quiz grade. (The others will count as class work).
