Prior to Hybrid Vehicle Operation • If for any reason you are uncomfortable operating this vehicle, stop now and ask for another vehicle. You may contact Fleet Service’s Motor Pool Section and request another vehicle.
Pima County has a fleet of hybrid vehicles • 2005 – 2009 • None have been involved in an accident recall. • Fleet Services is responding to any recall updates from the manufacturer.
Sticking or Uncontrolled Acceleration Guidelines In the event you are faced with an accelerator that is sticking, it is recommended by both the vehicle manufacturer, Fleet Services and Risk Management that you do the following:
Don’t Panic! Although it is easy to say, we realize that it may be hard to stay calm in an emergency situation like this. The following “control” information is provided:
The vehicle can be controlled by stepping on the brake pedal with both feet using firm and steady pressure. DO NOT pump the brake pedal – this will deplete the vacuum utilized for the power brake assist.
Move the transmission gear shifter to the left into the Neutral “N” position and hold it in the neutral position until the gear indicator on the dash reads “N” and you feel the vehicle begin to slow down. • Steer the car to a safe, out of the way place. • Keeping pressure on the brakes, the car will come to a stop.
Once stopped, push and hold the POWER button down for at least 3 seconds until the vehicle is powered off.
If you are unable to put the vehicle in neutral, turn the engine off. You will need to hold the POWER button down for at least 3 seconds before the vehicle will shut off while still applying the brakes. • Steering will appear harder than normal because the power assist is disabled but it is ok. • Do not restart the vehicle! Immediately contact Fleet Services at 740-2674 to have the vehicle towed.
Another Suggestion…. • We suggest that you practice shifting this vehicle from drive to neutral prior to operation so you have an understanding of the gear shift. • Please do this in a safe location such as the Mission Road facility and at low speeds.
Additional Information • If you have any other questions regarding this vehicle, please see the owner’s manual or contact Fleet Services at 740-2670.
Risk Management’s Statement of Assurance Risk Management has taken the time to test the information presented today to ensure its accuracy. If these steps are followed, they will provide you with a safe method of slowing down an accelerating vehicle.
