WWI • Causes of WWI • According to the filmmaker, what single event started WWI? • What motive did GavriloPrincip have to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand? • Why was Eastern Europe (the Balkans) known as the “powder keg”? • How was one event able to trigger war throughout the entire continent of Europe?
I. Rise of Nationalism • A. While most Europeans disliked Napoleon, many admired what he had accomplished • What did Napoleon accomplish? • B. His empire, along with the French Revolution, inspired the idea of nationalism
I. Rise of Nationalism • C. Nationalism is the idea that people identify themselves as a part of a community defined by the same language, government, and culture. This community is called a nation. • D. Before nationalism, people would be loyal to their king, town, or region. Now, their loyalty is to their people
I. Rise of Nationalism • E. Nationalism led to the unification of German and Italian people under one nation and one government. • 1. Germans were united because of their leader Otto von Bismarck, who led the strong Prussian military to victories over Austria and France, uniting the German people.

II. The Road to War • A. After the victory over France, Germany feared that France would seek revenge. • B. In order to protect itself, it made an alliance with Austria – Hungary • What is an alliance? • 1. Germany, Austria – Hungary, and their allies were known as the Central Powers • This made Germany even more powerful. How do you think the other nations in Europe responded?
II. The Road to War • C. In order to protect themselves from these nations, Britain, France and Russia also created an alliance. • 1. These nations and their allies are known as the allied powers • What is the danger of having these alliances? • What do you think will happen next?
III. Causes of WWI • A. Belief in nationalism said that a country should do what is best for itself, not what is best for the world • B. Alliances (Allied Powers vs. Central Powers) • C. Militarism – the building up of a military • 1. Nations involved in these alliances began militarism in preparation for a war.
III. Causes of WWI • D. Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand • 1. Ferdinand was to be the next ruler over Austria – Hungary • 2. He was assassinated by a group of people who wanted independence for Serbia (which had an alliance with Russia)
III. Causes of WWI • E. Once Austria – Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia declared war on Austria – Hungary • 1. The rest of Europe soon declared war on each other

Causes of WWI • With the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. • Russia (Serbia’s ally) declared war on Austria-Hungary • Germany (Austria-Hungary’s ally) declared war on Russia • France (Russia’s ally) declared war on Germany • Austria-Hungary (Germany’s ally) declared war on France. • Britain (France’s ally) declared war on Germany and Austria-Hungary • WWI is on

IV. WWI • A. WWI was fought on two fronts • Germany and Austria Hungary battled Russia and their allies in the east while Germany fought France, Britain, and later the United States in the west • B. Eventually, both fronts came to a stalemate • 1. Stalemate – when both sides of a contest are neither winning nor losing • Stalemate = tie
IV. WWI • 2. The reason this happened is because both armies dug trenches and fought from inside them • 3. This led to the spread of diseases within the trenches

IV. WWI • C. WWI saw the invention and use of two new weapons of war • 1. Airplanes were used to bomb troops who believed they were safe in their trenches • 2. Tanks were used to break through the enemy lines
IV. WWI • D. The Russian Revolution took place in 1917 • 1. With the support of most of the Russian people, a group called the Bolsheviks killed the Russian Czar (king) and his family • 2. The Bolsheviks were a political party that supported the idea of communism • Communism is a form of government introduced by Karl Marx
IV. WWI • a. Communism - is a form of government where all economic and social aspects are controlled by the government and all property and money are evenly distributed to the people • 3. Under the Bolsheviks and communism, Russia is now known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR)
IV. WWI • The first communist dictator was Vladamir Lenin • 4. This revolution eliminated Russia from the war • E. With the Russians gone, now the Central Powers only needed to fight on the western front
IV. WWI • 1. With this new threat, governments used propaganda to get more troops and additional help from their citizens. • a. Propaganda – ideas spread to influence the opinions of a group of people

Believing they could win and bring a quick end to the war, the Germans began an offensive (an attack) to capture Paris • The Germans knew that they would have to fight a two front war • They believed they could quickly defeat France, then turn all their forces on Russia • Schlieffen Plan
IV. WWI • G. However, new American troops replenished the Allies and they were able to ultimately defeat Germany and the Central Powers in 1918

V. Aftermath of WWI • A. After the war was over, France and Britain wanted to punish Germany for the war • B. The United States, however, wanted to create an organization that would work to prevent future wars
V. Aftermath of WWI • 1. Called the League of Nations • C. Eventually, the United States, France and Britain forced Germany to sign the Treaty of Versailles
V. Aftermath of WWI • 1. The Treaty of Versailles – Agreement that ended WWI and punished Germany • 2. This treaty made Germany pay reparations – or payments to victorious nations because of the war • How do you think the German people felt about this? • 3.
