There are five different groups of animals with backbones. They are: • Mammals • Fish • Reptile • Birds • Amphibians
There are some Things that make the zebra a mammal. A zebra is warm-blooded. They breathe using their lungs. A zebra’s skin is covered in fur. The zebra gives birth to a live baby. The baby lives on mother’s milk.
Appearance A zebra is covered in black and white stripes. They have round, pointy ears and long faces. They also have long tails. A long mane goes all the way down their neck.
Appearance Adult zebras have black and white stripes. A young zebra has brown and white stripes. They are called foals. Newborns stay close to their mothers. Babies weigh 70 pounds at birth.
Food Zebras eat grass, shrubs, herbs, and bark. Zebras eat only plants. A zebra grinds their teeth when they eat hard food. Zebras grow new teeth to replace the old teeth just like humans.
Where Zebras Live • Zebra are found only in grasslands in African Plains. Zebras live in central and eastern Africa. They live on grasslands called savannahs.
How Zebras Protect Themselves Zebras must protect themselves from many dangerous predators. Hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, lions, and leopards hunt Zebras.
A map of Africa Some zebra live in the low hill country or dry deserts of northeast Africa. Most zebras live in herds. The oldest female leads the group.
