  1. Performance(Practical)Exam Study Guide American Chiropractic Neurology Board 2014 Certification Exam Study Guide

  2. Welcome to the Performace Exam Study Guide • The documents you need are all available for download from the ACNB.org website • This presentation will walk you through the various offerings available to assist you in preparing for the exam • First: All the documents may be found on the website by going to “Who We Serve”, selecting “Candidates” and then “Study Guide” • The list of all the reference documents is also on the Home page in the section titled “Helpful Candidate Documents”

  3. Candidate Study Guide Documents On the Home page:

  4. Candidate Study Guide Documents • In the right column on the home page the item titled “2014 Performance Exam Overview” is a description of the exam with explanations, be sure to review this document. • All these documents along with additional explanations are also available on the Candidates page under the heading Study Guide.

  5. Important Exam Information • FOR THE EXAM – • BE ON TIME!!! • Have a cell phone with you and turned on until you arrive at the exam site in case you need to be contacted by examination personnel • Once at the site turn your phone over to the Proctor for the duration of the exam • Note from the Executive Director: If you don’t show up on time, I will call your cell phone and if I can’t get you that way, I call your home. This frightens families and I don’t like doing this; but I will because this is a high stakes exam and I want you to have every opportunity to take it. If you do not show, you receive an immediate fail and you forfeit your fees. So, if you have an emergency, CALL ME!I can be reached 24 hours a day during the testing periods.

  6. Performance Exam Blueprint • Be sure to review the entire Performance Exam Extended Blueprint: The link to the Performance Exam extended Blueprint looks like this: • The last two charts are the written exam overview charts. Be sure that you are can perform each identified examination and can identify findings from each test on the Performance Exam Extended Blueprints.

  7. Performance Exam History Sheet • First, review the Case History Template for Performance Exam and look at the order of the history. I recommend that you use this in your practice or, if you are not practicing as yet, get friends to complete some and practice using this form. You will only have a specified time to complete this portion and you need to be familiar so you do not waste time flipping back and forth. The link looks like:

  8. Example History • Second, review the Sample Case History. This is a form that patients complete prior to seeing the Chiropractic Neurologist, according to the Job Analysis. You must be able to take a history such as this, develop clarification questions with differential diagnoses or methods of examination or special studies in order to arrive at a diagnosis. Look at this form and test yourself. Write some questions and differentials.

  9. Example History Answer Sheet • The Sample Case History Clarification Flow sheet is the Answer sheet to the Sample Case History. • You will need to review your own questions and differential diagnoses against this sheet. This is the form that you will use during the exam. It will be several pages of the blank table with the summary table at the end. • Practice using the Template and some blank tables to become fluid in this process.

  10. Physical Exam Sheet – Page 1 • The second portion of the Performance exam is the Physical Examination. • You can find the link to the form on the Home page and in the Candidate Study Guide. Here is what the link looks like. • You will be allowed to have a copy (provided to you by the examiners) during the exam. It has been changed from last year. You must actually perform all of the items on the exam. You may not delegate the listed vital signs. We have removed items that were indicated as unimportant by the Job Analysis.

  11. Physical Exam Sheet – Page 2 • Be sure to use the Primary References to assure that your technique is correct. Look at the notes on the references. The second website does have one error-the Joint Position Sense test on that website is incorrect, so use the Utah website for that technique. You will have 60 minutes for this part of the test, so film yourself, check your performance against the references and become fluid with your technique and flow of the physical exam. Your “patient” will answer your questions. The Associate Examiners are not to give you answers or to question you. They may redirect you if you are wandering off of the required elements. You do not get credit for adding in other elements, so do not replace elements if there are some you do not do well. Learn to do them well.

  12. Utah Website on Video Clips • The Primary References have two websites listed. • These will help you if you use them. They each have normal results and abnormal results. Again, the Utah website is the best. You may also Google various conditions and see You Tube videos to practice looking at videos. Remember, You Tube videos have not been vetted and we do not know how accurate they are. You may also Google retinal photography pictures. Use reputable websites from Medical schools to discriminate conditions showing in the retina. You will have 45 minutes to view each video clip 2 times. You will have to request to see a clip again if you need it. The answers are NOT multiple choice. When you examine a patient, you do not have multiple choice on your wall. The exams (both written and performance) as as close to real life as we can make them.

  13. Questions • If you have questions, email them to the Executive Director at:Executivedirector@acnb.org • Questions will be distributed to the members of the test construction committee for consideration and answers. The answers will then be available to all the Candidates from the “Candidate Important Facts” page on the website in a downloadable format. Please read what is posted before you ask the same question again.
