Well the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 has provided for old buildings properties to be well protected from any alteration such as extension or even demolition. Since these buildings have been carefully identified, there’s a list for reference and these protected buildings are called “Listed Buildings”. If you are wondering whether you can get your 100 years old building listed then it is a “No!” There are some parameters which allows a certain building to be elected as “listed building” for example the building should be built before the 1700 and should have had no or minimum alterations so that their original architecture is still visible. But there are times where buildings dating till 1840 will qualify and after that only buildings which are in essence exceptional or have come up from renowned architects will be listed. Buildings with innovative designs can also be listed. While the most common type which are listed are buildings, there are nevertheless other forms of construction which have made it or can make it in the future such as walls, bridges, gravestones or even telephone kiosks. Depending on the state they are in, buildings will be classified into grades. The grades are as follows: • Grade l – these buildings are of exceptional interest • Grade ll* - these types are somewhat more important and can be qualified as more than special interest • Grade ll - these buildings are said to be of special interest Martyn Pattie Architects & Designers Great Bansons, Bansons Lane Ongar, Essex, CM5 9AR 01277 364979 architect@martynpattie.co.uk http://www.martynpattie.co.uk/
