MNRTC is an expedited alternate route for career changers with BA and higher degrees to become high-quality secondary teachers in core content areas such as Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Robotics, and World Languages. It aims to address teacher shortages in other areas like Career and Technical Education, English as a Second Language, Bilingual Education, and Special Education. MNRTC includes an induction program with mentoring and coaching, and collaborative agreements with local districts and providers. Michigan needs MNRTC to meet the requirements of the Michigan Merit Curriculum and to tap into a pool of well-prepared content specialists. MNRTC participant requirements include specific prerequisites, observational experience, passing assessments, and background checks. Program providers include teacher preparation institutions, intermediate school districts, professional organizations, and private entities approved by the State Board of Education. The program design is limited to secondary preparation and must be completed within 15 months or less. Required coursework covers various areas of knowledge, and mentoring and supervision are provided to assess participants' performance. Research on alternate routes can be found on the Teach Now website. For more information, contact Flora L. Jenkins, Ph.D., at jenkinsf@mi.gov or 517-373-6505.
