  1. Research Data ManagementFunding in Astronomy ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project Research councils that fund Astronomy research are EPSRC and STFC. Institute apply for a rolling grant that pays for a specific number of PGRS stipends and PDRAs. Funding is generally awarded to people for a fixed period of time during which they carry out research in a specific area of Astronomy, described in the funding proposal; however, funding is also available for large projects involving numerous people. ERC starting grants Leverhulme Trust early career fellowships Human Frontier Science Program National science foundation Royal Society fellowships and Newton international fellowships EU Marie Curie fellowships Daphne Jackson grant Dorothy Hodgkin fellowships Loreal - UNESCO fellowship for women Some grants require international collaboration, or a move to another country or institute. Marie Curie has an International Incoming fellowships which can be applied to for returning fellows. Project Planning with Research Data Management

  2. Research Data ManagementFunding in Astronomy ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project • Many funding applications, for example STFC, use the Joint Electronic Submissions (Je-S) system. • A typical funding application may include sections on: • Relevant experience in the field • Evidence of public outreach • Science justification for this project • Evidence of the benefits to the community of this project • Publication list of either relevant previous work or applicants work • Budget • Data Management Plan Project Planning with Research Data Management

  4. Research Data ManagementMetadata in Astronomy ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project Simple things like recording a title for each column in your measurements table; but make sure that they make sense and can be reused… Where exactly is region 1, 2, 3, etc. and which was Map 1, Map 2 etc.? Getting Started with Research Data Management

  5. Research Data ManagementMetadata in Astronomy ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project Include a header to the file: The header includes the command line so we now know exactly which file was fed into the script ‘funregflux’; knots-match.reg With this information, we can determine where each region is in the image IF the region file is also available. Getting Started with Research Data Management

  6. Research Data ManagementMetadata in Astronomy ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project Or rename the column and row heading to something more descriptive: IF the region file is not available, then the information is useless. These regions are for jet knots in Centaurus A; elliptical regions with image co-ordinates. The regions describe particular positions in the sky so would need to be coordinates or knot names in the table. Getting Started with Research Data Management

  9. Research Data ManagementStorage in CAR ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project Your responsibility Not backed up UH server laptop External HD DVD, Tape UH Networked PC Networked /home and /data drives local drive STRI Cluster Safeguarding data with Research Data Management

  10. Research Data ManagementRemote access to CAR ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project • Access to the CAR server where /home and /data are hosted is via the star.herts.ac.uk. • From a Linux machine, use slogin, ssh, or telnet on the command line followed by your CAR username@star.herts.ac.uk and entering your password when prompted. • This username is likely not the same as your staff details – see John Atkinson. • Mac machines can also access the networked /home and /data drives directly • From a windows machine, use can use: • WinSCP to ftp, ssh, and scp files from your windows machine to and from star, • PuTTY to view your files in a shell and run screen to set programs running on your Linux machine so that they wont stop when you close the PuTTY session. 11. Research Data ManagementSharing data in Astronomy ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project • If your file is small, <20MB, you can email it to your colleagues - a plot or draft paper… • Larger files can be shared • internally by emailing the location on the /data drive • by copying temporarily to the /scratch drive, which is regularly emptied • by sending the file using file exchange (Zend. To at UH) which involves copying to the UH server using the online interface, where the recipient can retrieve it within 3 days. Safeguarding data with Research Data Management

  12. Research Data ManagementSecurity in Astronomy ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project • You should keep your CAR log in details confidential • You should not leave unpublished work in the public domain, for example, your personal web space or /scratch • Do not share using DropBox or other cloud storage which are subject to international laws and could lead to prosecution • Encrypt sensitive data; ground breaking results that could be stolen Safeguarding data with Research Data Management

  13. Research Data ManagementPublishing in Astronomy ESA/PACS & SPIRE Consortium, Sergio Molinari, Hi-GAL Project There are a number of international peer-reviewed journals where you should publish: Excluding Review Journals, ApJS, and Solar specific journals, the highest impact journals in Astronomy are: Nature (36.597) 554745 interdisciplinary Science (31.027) 508489 interdisciplinary ApJ (16.238) 191940 MNRAS (5.521) 96083 A&A (5.084) 101305 AJ (4.965) 34668 All have high cites in 2012.
